# Citations

> Citations are the pages a grounded engine read and cited while answering a prompt. They show where engines get their information about your category.

Engines with web search look up pages before they answer. Notra saves the search queries they ran and the sources they cited for every answer.

A mention means the answer names your brand, while a citation means the engine linked a page as a source. You can be mentioned without being cited, and an engine can cite your page without recommending you.

## Which engines return citations

ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overview all return their sources, and so do OpenCode, Claude Code and Codex when they are enabled. Engines labelled **No web search**, such as Grok, DeepSeek, Mistral and Cursor, answer without searching, so their answers never have citations.

## Your own pages

Notra marks an answer as citing you when any source URL is on your brand website or one of your [tracked domains](/docs/geo/brand-and-domains). The Overview page counts these citations per engine, but there is no separate citation rate metric yet.

## Where to find them

* Answer details on the [Prompts](/docs/geo/prompts) page list the cited sources and search queries.
* [Shelf Space](/docs/geo/shelf-space) groups cited third-party pages and tracks whether you are listed on them.
* The **What changed** card flags **Citation gained**, **Citation lost** and **Competitor cited**.
